Internship for lecturers of NUWGP under the AFISHE project in Portugal
During the past week (February 19-24, 2024), the first part of the internship for lecturers from the National University of Water Management and Nature Conservation (NUWMNC) took place at the University of Porto as part of the ERASMUS+ AFISHE project "Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries Education for Green Deal in Armenia and Ukraine: from education to ecology."
On the first day of the internship, the international group of lecturers from Ukraine and Armenia was welcomed by the Vice-Rector of the University of Porto, Joana Carvalho, in the historic rectorate building in the city center. This was followed by a tour of the university grounds guided by a tour guide who shared the history and prominent figures associated with it and introduced them to an exhibition of sculptures created in the genre of naive art. Additionally, the Portuguese project managers Augusto Faustino and Paulo Vaz Pires familiarized the participants with the schedule of training sessions and excursions.
On the next day, the internship included excursions to the "SEA LIFE" aquarium network in Porto and to the scientific unit of the University of Porto – the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research "CIIMAR RESEARCH CENTER." The aquarium impressed with the diversity of living organisms and the wide range of ecosystems replicated in its area – from freshwater river to tropical and cold-water marine. The research center is simultaneously implementing a vast number of projects (in the fields of sustainable management of marine resources, environmental monitoring, aquaculture, biotechnology, etc.). Therefore, during the familiarization tour, the Portuguese partners presented the main research divisions related to genetic research, biomonitoring, and the conservation of valuable and endangered species....
On the third day, project participants visited a fishing port, the fish auction "DOCA PESCA," and the fish canning factory "PINHAIS," where they learned about the peculiarities of sanitary control of caught fish and seafood, the organization of fish auctions in the port, as well as the technological processes of processing and production of fish preserves using traditional technologies passed down from generation to generation for over 100 years (and they packed one in paper wrapping with their own hands, which was later gifted to us ;)
Fourth day: an excursion to the modern high-tech mariculture farm "FLATLANTIC AQUACULTURE," the most famous and largest in Portugal (clearly visible on satellite images from Google maps), and a visit to the "ELA" museum and aquarium. The aquarium and museum are dedicated to local marine and freshwater biotopes, aquatic fauna and flora, including fish caught by local fishermen, as well as marine invertebrates and macroalgae.
On the fifth day, a training session began, which will continue throughout the next week.
