Educational and professional program "Biotechnology" of the second (master's) level
General information about the program, its development history and implementation
The educational and professional program "Biotechnology" was created as a logical continuation of the bachelor's program "Biotechnology, Biorobotics, and Bioenergy" in response to Euro-integration challenges and the growing demand of the regional labor market in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering. The initiative to start the program was implemented through extensive discussions involving the scientific and pedagogical staff of NUVHP, employers, representatives of local authorities, studentsthe first (bachelor's) leveland other stakeholders, which ensured the applied orientation and nature of the program.
According to the decision of the Scientific Council of NUVHP (No. 3 dated 29.03.24), educational activities in the specialty 162 "Biotechnology and Bioengineering" (field of knowledge 16) began on September 1, 2024. The program defines admission requirements, the structure of the curriculum, the number of ECTS credits, formed competencies, and program learning outcomes aimed at performing project-technological calculations and production-technological tasks in applied fields (biotechnology, water purification biotechnology, bioenergy).
The process of ensuring the relevance of the program is built on a cyclical monitoring system: annual monitoring, public discussions, and consideration of conclusions from the quality department, licensing and accreditation department, decisions of the Scientific Council, and requirements of the Ministry of Education according to the Regulations on Monitoring, Updating, Modernization, and Closure of the Program. The program was updated in 2025; the latest edition was approved by the Scientific Council of NUVHP (protocol No. 7 dated 04.07.2025).
The content of the program combines fundamental biological and engineering disciplines with applied modules that emphasize the use of biological agents and biotechnological processes to solve problems in energy, medicine, agriculture, and ecology. The program has a practical orientation: practical classes, course projects and works, internships with partners that enhance the competitiveness of graduates in national and regional labor markets.
The current life cycle of the program involves regular revisions: collecting feedback from students and employers, analyzing future employment outcomes, adapting syllabi, and introducing specialized elective majors for rapid response to changing market needs. The "Biotechnology" program is positioned as an innovative program aimed at training specialists capable of implementing modern technologies and developing the industry in Ukraine and beyond.
Qualification title:Master in Biotechnology and Bioengineering.
Type of diploma, scope of the educational program, forms of education and expected duration of the program: Single, 90 ECTS credits, full-time study, expected duration of the program - 1 year 4 months.
Accreditation status:Accreditation is planned for the fall of 2025.
Cycle/Level:NRK Ukraine – level 7, FQ-EHEA – second cycle, EQF-LLL – level 7.
Prerequisites:Availability of a bachelor's, master's degree, or educational-qualification level "specialist". The competitive selection of individuals entering based on the bachelor's degree, master's degree, or educational-qualification level "specialist" is determined by the admission rules for the educational-professional program of the second level of higher education.
Language of instruction:Ukrainian.
Goals of the educational program:Training of highly qualified, competitive engineers and scientists who possess a complex of general and professional competencies and moral-ethical qualities, flexible and creative thinking for successfully solving complex tasks and problems in biotechnology, which involves conducting research and/or implementing innovations, and is characterized by uncertainty of conditions and requirements, capable of organizing and conducting research, project, and production-technological works related to the use of biological agents and products of their vital activity.
Characteristics of the educational program:
Subject area:
- Object: biotechnological processes of obtaining biologically active substances and products through biosynthesis and/or biotransformation, as well as their engineering implementation.
- Training objectives: training engineers and scientists capable of organizing and conducting research, project, and production-technological works related to the use of biological agents and products of their vital activity.
- Theoretical content of the subject area. Fundamental and applied scientific foundations of the industrial use of biosynthetic and/or biotransformation potential of living organisms for obtaining practically valuable products.
- Methods, methodologies, and technologies. Chemical, physicochemical, biochemical, microbiological, molecular-biological, genetic research methods, technologies of biotechnological production, information, and computer technologies.
- Tools and equipment: for the analysis of biological agents and products of their vital activity, equipment for cultivating biological agents, isolation and purification of target products, automation tools, and systems for automated design of biotechnological production.
Orientation of the educational program:Educational and professional.
Main focus of the educational program:Theory and practice of producing biotechnological products for industrial use, conducting scientific research, and engaging in educational activities that adhere to the principles of sustainable development and innovation.

Program specifics:Transfer of theories and principles from advanced biotechnology into construction, water purification, and bioenergy. Addressing new questions raised by the scientific community, industry, and society. Seeking innovative solutions based on the prospects of sustainable development and climate neutrality. Effective work both in teams and independently, applying project management in an interdisciplinary environment. Utilizing the principle of continuous learning as a means to independently assess and structure the learning processes and take responsibility for continuous professional development.
Employability:Field of professional activity - participation in the development of projects, technologies, and materials during the creation, operation, and reconstruction of facilities, scientific research, educational, expert, and consulting activities in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering.
According to the obtained educational qualification, the master is capable of performing professional work in the professions specified in DK 003:2010: 1210.1 - Heads of enterprises, institutions, and organizations; 2211.2: Biotechnologist; 2149.1: Junior research fellow (engineering field); 2149.2: Engineer-technologist, Quality engineer, Laboratory engineer; 2211.1 Junior research fellow (biology); 2310.2: Assistant, Lecturer at higher education institutions; 2419.3: State expert. Professional certification is possible.
