From June 22, first-year students majoring in "Water Bioresources and Aquaculture" in group VBA-11 began their educational practice in hydrobotany and zoology under the guidance of a professor from the Department of Water Bioresources.Yuliia Romanivna Grokhovskaia.
One of the first activities was a walking excursion to the Basivkut Reservoir, during which the students familiarized themselves with the characteristics of the flora and fauna of the artificial water body. The future specialists observed waterfowl and learned how to monitor them in natural conditions. In addition to aquatic species, attention was also given to common residents of urbanized areas—jackdaws, pigeons, and rooks, whose behavior was also observed by the practice participants.
An important component of the class was the study of aquatic and amphibious vegetation. Students identified plant species, collected herbarium material for botanical journals, studied the patterns of plant community distribution, and became familiar with the dominants and subdominants of phytocenoses. Special attention was given to various ecological groups of aquatic plants—submerged plants, plants with floating leaves, and amphibious species.
During their research, future specialists also noted the spread of invasive plant species near the water body, including Sosnowsky's hogweed, American maple, and Canadian goldenrod, which pose a threat to local biodiversity.
A true highlight of the practical class was the blooming of yellow lilies, which adorned the surface of the Basivkut Reservoir and allowed students to see one of the most characteristic types of aquatic flora in its natural environment.
The internship allows students to consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired during classroom lectures and gain initial skills in field research of aquatic ecosystems.
