Today, as part of the collaboration between higher education institutions and the development of academic mobility for students majoring in specialty N5 "Water Bioresources and Aquaculture," a guest lecture was held on the topic: "Features of the Morphology of the Breathing Organs of the Clarias Catfish (Based on Personal Research Results)."
The lecture was delivered by Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Leonid Petrovich Horal'skyi from the Department of Zoology, Biological Monitoring, and Nature Conservation at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University.
During the lecture, the anatomical and morphological features of the breathing organs of the Clarias catfish were highlighted, the species' adaptation to conditions of oxygen deficiency, as well as the functioning of the suprabranchial organ (a distinctive feature of the catfish is a developed special organ for breathing atmospheric oxygen, which is essentially true 'lungs' that replace gills when the fish is out of water. Both organs - gills and 'lungs' - are necessary for survival, but the suprabranchial organ is more important.), as an important element of additional aerial breathing. The lecturer paid special attention to the practical significance of these features for modern aquaculture and the cultivation of Clarias catfish in closed water supply systems.
Students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest scientific approaches in the field of histology, morphology, and physiology of fish, ask questions to the lecturer, and discuss the prospects of using Clarias catfish in intensive aquaculture technologies.
Conducting such guest lectures contributes to deepening students' professional knowledge, developing inter-university cooperation, and integrating modern scientific achievements into the educational process.
