May 11, 2026, in the context of the development of academic mobility and inter As part of the "Visiting Professors" project, initiated by the Department of Zoology, Biological Monitoring, and Nature Conservation, a guest lecture was held at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University by Candidate of Veterinary Sciences, Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Aquatic Biological Resources of the National University of Water Management and Nature Resources Use, Tetiana Poltavchenko, on the topic: "Infectious and Non-Infectious Diseases of Fish in Ukraine."
Participants of the event included students of the educational programs "Water Bioresources and Aquaculture" from NUVHP and Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University, for whom the topic of the lecture is particularly relevant in the context of the development of modern aquaculture and increasing demands for biosecurity in fish farming enterprises.
During the lecture, I presented relevant material on alimentary diseases or metabolic disorders that arise due to improper feeding practices or the inconsistency of feed composition with the physiological needs of fish. Special attention was given to the problems that often occur in industrial aquaculture conditions—recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and cage farming, where fish are completely dependent on artificial feeds.
A separate section of the lecture was dedicated to infectious diseases in fish caused by viruses, bacteria, and fungi, which pose a significant danger due to their ability for rapid epizootic spread. Students became thoroughly acquainted with the characteristics of the course of aeromonosis (carp rubella), viral hemorrhagic septicemia, and saprolegniosis, including their clinical signs and manifestations. The attendees also learned about lymphosarcomatosis—a specific tumor disease that primarily affects pike and perch.
The lecture was accompanied by an informative presentation with photographic materials of fish affected by diseases, which allowed the participants to visually familiarize themselves with the pathological changes and external markers of fish diseases.
The organization of such events within the framework of academic mobility promotes deeper collaboration between higher education institutions, the exchange of scientific and practical experience, and enhances the level of professional training for future specialists in the field of aquatic bioresources and aquaculture.
