For more than 30 years, scientific and pedagogical staff of the department, led by Dr. Agr. Sci., ProfessorMykola Olexandrovych Klymenko., have improved scientific approaches to the rational use and protection of the environment. In particular, approaches have been developed for the creation of maps based on integral indicators, which are used for the visual assessment of social, economic, and ecological conditions, as well as the sustainability index of any territory, facilitating essential management decisions for improving the situation.
As a result of the research, theoretical foundations, principles of construction and implementation of a sustainability index assessment model have been developed, which characterizes the state of social, economic, and ecological subsystems of regions considering their natural and landscape features, as well as the structure and requirements for methodological and informational support for its implementation.
Special attention in the research of the scientific school is given to the problem of modernizing education for the implementation of sustainable development principles and preparing teaching and methodological support for training master's students to apply the principles of sustainable development in regions.
The scientific novelty of the results obtained:
a methodology for comprehensive environmental monitoring has been developed, which includes theoretical and practical aspects of assessing the state of the surrounding natural environment, features of organizing different levels of the monitoring system, modern methods and tools for monitoring research, methodological foundations for organizing observations and analyzing atmospheric pollution, surface, groundwater, soil cover, and the condition of urban ecosystems and agro-sphere;
it has been established for the first time that long-term intensive use of drained sod-podzolic and sod-carbonate soils of Western Polissya, Ukraine, leads to a significant deterioration of their agro-meliorative and agro-ecological condition due to progressive degradation processes, manifested in a decrease in moisture reserves, humus content, an increase in acidity, and a decrease in soil nutrient levels of macroelements, contaminated with radionuclides and heavy metals;
a classification of the hydrothermal regime of peat soils in Polissya, Ukraine, has been developed based on quantitative and qualitative indicators, differentiating types, subtypes, genera, and species.
an agro-meliorative assessment of local meliorants (loams, marls, tuffs, sapropels, phosphorites) has been carried out, establishing their positive impact on the composition, properties, regimes, and processes of sod-podzolic soils;
an assessment of the impact of long-term agricultural use of dark gray forest soils on their fertility indicators has been conducted, and a methodology for assessing their agro-ecological condition has been proposed;
an assessment of the ecological state of the agroecosystem in the zone of influence of Public Joint Stock Company 'Volyn-Cement' has been carried out by determining the levels of pollution with heavy metals of the soil cover, crop and livestock production, drinking water, and damage to the pollen grains of 30 plant species using the 'Sterility of Pollen of Plants - Bioindicators' test system;
an assessment of the ecological state of the basins of the rivers Horyn, Western Bug, Ustya, Zamychysko, Veselukha, and Ikva has been conducted based on a set of indicators that determine the quality of the surface waters of these rivers;
an assessment of the state of aquatic ecosystems has been conducted based on a range of indicators: ecological, biotesting, phytomonitoring;
features have been established and mathematical models of heavy metal migration in aquatic ecosystems have been developed;
schemes and types of ecological monitoring of surface waters in river basins have been proposed, and permissible ecological quality standards for river water in the Polissya region of Ukraine have been established;
an assessment of the ecological state of the river basins in Western Georgia has been conducted, and criteria for ecological evaluation of surface water quality for various types of water use have been developed;
a landscape-ecological analysis of the city of Rivne has been carried out, highlighting the integrated factors that shape the conditions of the urban environment: technogenic load, pollution, naturalness, comfort;
an assessment of pollution in the urban ecosystem of Rivne has been conducted based on indicators of damage to bioindicator plants, and the possibility of using common dandelion as such a system has been proven;
formalized approaches to calculating integral indicators of socio-ecological development for districts and Rivne region have been developed using a multi-level vertical aggregation method of basic indicators of stimulators and de-stimulators into higher hierarchical level indicators;
a system of indicators for sustainable development has been proposed for assessing the socio-economic-ecological state of small towns, rural communities, and districts.
