On May 9, an open lecture titled 'Changes in Soil Organic Matter Under Different Management Practices' was held for students of the Department of Agroengineering, delivered by Nadia Maaroufi, Associate Professor, PhD, SLU (Sweden). The meeting was conducted by Oksana Valetska (NUWGP, SLU).
During the lecture, key processes of the formation, transformation, and stabilization of soil organic matter were discussed, as well as the factors determining its long-term accumulation. Special attention was given to the role of the carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N) in the dynamics of organic matter: from the speed of mineralization to the potential for carbon stabilization in different soil types. The discussion covered how changes in C:N in added organic materials affect microbial activity, the balance between mineralization and humification, and the overall effectiveness of organic fertilizers.
As part of the lecture, results of long-term experiments conducted at SLU aimed at assessing changes in organic carbon content under conditions of perennial application of various types of organic fertilizers were presented. These studies demonstrate how the type of organic material, its chemical properties, and C:N determine the trajectory of carbon accumulation or loss in the soil, as well as their impact on the fertility and resilience of agroecosystems in the long term.
A separate section of the lecture was dedicated to the peculiarities of organic carbon accumulation in intensively maintained green areas — specifically lawns and golf courses — where the combination of regular care, high root biomass, and specific fertilization regimes creates unique conditions for carbon sequestration.
The meeting received a wide response among participants and became a significant foundation for a professional discussion regarding modern methods of enhancing soil fertility and improving organic fertilization, which is critically important in light of current challenges related to soil degradation and pollution.
