The Department of "Thermal Gas Supply, Ventilation, and Energy Audit" (prior to 2001 – "Sewage and Sanitary Engineering," from 2001 to 2013 "Water Drainage, Thermal Gas Supply, and Ventilation," from 2013 to 2025 "Thermal Gas Supply, Ventilation, and Sanitary Engineering") was established in 1964. Since 1999, the department has been responsible for training students in the new specialty "Thermal Gas Supply and Ventilation," and since 2019 – under the educational and professional program "Energy Efficiency of Buildings and Inspection of Engineering Systems." The department also participates in the training of specialists in other specialties: "Water Supply and Water Drainage," "Industrial and Civil Engineering," "Urban Construction and Economy," "Technology of Building Structures, Products, and Materials," "Architecture and Urban Planning," etc.
Since 1966, the admission to postgraduate studies has begun, through which almost all current faculty members of the department have passed. 30 postgraduate students of the department have defended candidate dissertations, and five of them later defended doctoral theses. The main scientific direction of the department until 2013 was focused on the purification of urban and industrial wastewater. Research was conducted on physicochemical methods of wastewater treatment (particularly flotation), intensification of biological wastewater treatment, sedimentation, magnetic-reagent wastewater treatment, filtration through granular materials, sludge processing, and the application of CAD in the field of wastewater management, among others. In this scientific area, the department held a leading position among related departments and research institutions in Ukraine. The main objects of research included urban sewage treatment plants and wastewater disposal systems for enterprises in the light industry, meat-dairy industry, chemical, mechanical engineering, and agricultural facilities. The research divisions of the department operated in many cities across Ukraine and other countries (Kyiv, Chernihiv, Odesa, Lviv, Ternopil, Simferopol, Berdychiv, Chervonograd, Vasylkiv, Donetsk, Chornomorsk, Chernivtsi, Riga, Jelgava, Semipalatinsk, Chișinău, etc.).
As a result of the research, the department's staff has implemented over 500 developments, published more than 1,100 scientific articles, including 30 monographs, teaching aids, textbooks, and reference books, obtained over 160 author certificates for inventions, and a diploma for a scientific discovery. The research results have been included in a number of publications of SNIP and DBN related to water supply, land reclamation, and drainage (DBN V.2.5-75:2013. "Sewerage. External networks and structures. Basic design provisions." Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine: Kyiv, 2013), reference literature, national reports, and more.
With the reorientation of the department towards a new specialty, an increasing number of publications and research developments are dedicated to new directions in scientific research: the use of renewable energy sources in heating and heat supply systems, the utilization and recovery of waste heat, automated design of heat and gas supply, heating, and ventilation systems, etc. In 2017-2018, at the request of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine, a scientific research project was carried out, resulting in the development of regulatory frameworks, such as the "Methodology for distributing the volumes of communal services consumed in a building among consumers" and the "Procedure for equipping individual rooms in buildings with distribution accounting nodes, heat energy distribution devices, and engineering system equipment to ensure such accounting."
During the period of its activity, the department has graduated over 1,700 specialists. The faculty members of the department actively participated in the organizational work of the university as deans and deputy deans of the faculties (A.I. Matsnev, V.S. Kravchenko, V.V. Artamonov, P.P. Potapenko, O.P. Ihnatenko, O.O. Hrytsyna) and vice rectors (H.H. Vasyliev, V.V. Artamonov, M.M. Hiroly).
The first head of the department from 1964 to 1966 was Associate Professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences Mykola Panteleimonovych Belozorov. From 1966 to 1972, M.P. Belozorov was the head of the Department of Water Supply and Drilling. He wrote and successfully defended his candidate dissertation. From 1972 to January 1974, he was an associate professor in the Department of Sewerage. In 1973, M.P. Belozorov completed and submitted his doctoral dissertation for defense. Since February 1974, he has worked as a professor in the Department of Water Supply and Drilling.
From 1966 to 2001 (except for the period from 1984 to 1990), the department was headed by Professor, PhD in Technical Sciences Anatoliy Ivanovych Matsnev, an academician of the National Academy of Construction of Ukraine and an honorary professor of the university. A.I. Matsnev is a distinguished scientist who initiated a scientific direction in the area of wastewater treatment using flotation methods. The results of his research are reflected in 7 monographs, 3 textbooks, over 120 scientific works, and 25 certificates of authorship for inventions and patents. The research school he established includes 9 candidates of technical sciences. For his achievements, A.I. Matsnev has been awarded two bronze medals from the VDNH of the USSR, badges for "Excellent Achievements in Work" from the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR, "Inventor of the USSR," and honorary certificates from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
From 1984 to 1990, the department was headed by Professor Oleg Petrovich Syniov, Candidate of Technical Sciences. O.P. Syniov's research focused on the development of methods and structures for physicochemical and biological wastewater treatment, as well as the intensification and reconstruction of treatment facilities. Oleg Petrovich was the first in the country to initiate studies on mine aeration tanks and anaerobic reactors for wastewater treatment, publishing more than 200 scientific works.
In 1981, O.P. Synyov organized an industry research laboratory for wastewater treatment in agro-industrial enterprises, the developments of which have been implemented at many enterprises both in the country and abroad. Under his supervision, 7 candidate dissertations have been defended.
From 2001 to June 2013, the department was led by Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Honored Inventor of Ukraine Mykola Mykolaiovych Hiriol. The main direction of M.M. Hiriol's scientific activity is the development of technologies for physicochemical water treatment. He is the author of over 300 scientific works, based on which more than 200 water treatment facilities have been designed and built, yielding an economic effect of 2.8 million USD. M.M. Hiriol was the head of the international grant "Water Harmony" from NUVHP, and participated in the implementation of three international grants. Under his supervision, 6 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertations have been defended.
From June to September 2013, the department was headed by a professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Larysa Andriivna Sablii. L.A. Sablii worked at the department from 1980 to 2013 in the positions of assistant, associate professor, and professor. In 1989, she defended her candidate's dissertation, and in 2012, her doctoral dissertation on the topic "Physicochemical and Biological Treatment of Highly Concentrated Wastewater." L.A. Sablii is a member of the doctoral specialized academic council at the A.V. Dumansky Institute of Colloid Chemistry and Water Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the author of over 500 scientific works, including about 30 author certificates and patents for inventions. L.A. Sablii has prepared 7 candidates and 2 doctors of technical sciences.
Since September 2013, the department has been headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences, and Honored Educator of Ukraine M.D. Kizeyev, who is the author of over 100 scientific and methodological works, materials from which have become an integral part of regulatory documents for the design of drainage systems. These materials have been included in the projects of more than 200 facilities, of which over 100 have been constructed and put into operation, including more than 30 for NUVHP. The most significant among them is the "Reconstruction of Dormitory No. 8 of NUVHP into a Residential Building." After the commissioning of the first phase of the project (2006), 36 families of NUVHP employees received apartments.
M.D. Kizeyev is the head of the Scientific Research Production Business Center (SRPBC) of the university, which has completed and received funding for contract work totaling about 5 million UAH over the past 10 years. This allowed NUVHP to receive additional funding from the Ministry of Education in 2020, and the Department of TGW and ST, as well as the SRPBC, were awarded 2 sets of instruments for surveying engineering systems of buildings. Students are regularly engaged in the SRPBC, where they gain practical skills in design and applied scientific work, which have been and continue to be the foundation for their diploma projects and master's theses based on real cases.
At the initiative of the head of the Department of TGV and ST, M.D. Kizееv, and the active work of its teachers and other staff of the Institute of Water Management and Environmental Engineering during 2017-2018, materials were prepared for the application for participation of NULP in the international project "Higher Education in Ukraine. Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development."
NUWGP has become one of the universities funded under Stage II of this Project with financing from the European Investment Bank loan. Due to the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by Russia, work on this Project has been suspended. As of October 2024, project and cost documentation (PCD) for the major renovation (thermal modernization) of educational buildings No. 2 and No. 6 is being developed, while the faculty of the Department of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is providing scientific support for this process by reviewing the PCD concerning the new internal engineering systems of the buildings.
Over the past 10 years, the existing classrooms of the department have been renovated (652, 664) and the creation of new ones (room 7g1). In 2015, a stand of the company was installed in room 652.HERZIn 2016, a heat recovery unit for exhaust ventilation air from the company "VENTS" was installed in room 664.
In 2018, the application from NUVHP "Reconstruction of the hot water supply system for two dormitories of NUVHP based on a geothermal heat pump," which was prepared with the active participation of the head of the Department of Thermal Engineering and Heat Pumps, M.D. Kizeyev, won the competition for grant projects from the Finnish-Ukrainian Trust Fund. The grant amount is 143,000 euros. With these funds, partial modernization of the hot water supply systems of two dormitory buildings (No. 7 and No. 8) was carried out, along with the installation of a heat pump to utilize low-potential thermal energy from the ground. In 2022, after the completion of the installation of the heat pump system and geothermal wells on the premises and within the building,Auxiliary rooms of the dormitories have been equipped with a training and research laboratory for heat pump technologies of the Department of Thermal Engineering and Heat Power.
Department staff and students regularly publish in the university's scientific collections, as well as in Ukrainian and English collections of student scientific works. They systematically participate in international and nationwide scientific conferences, student Olympiads, and competitions, where they achieve prize-winning positions under the supervision of department faculty. In 2016, student V. Kovalchuk took 2nd place, and in 2017, 1st place in the nationwide Olympiads in the specialty "Heat and Gas Supply and Ventilation."
Due to the country's need for specialists in energy efficiency, energy auditing, and energy certification of buildings, an Attestation Commission was established at NUVHP starting in 2019, based on the faculty of the Department of Thermophysics and Building Structures and the Institute of Architecture and Design. This commission includes 6 faculty members from the department to conduct training and certification of specialists in energy certification and examination of engineering systems in buildings. Training and certification of specialists are carried out in the newly established Energy Efficiency Center of the university, which also involves faculty from the Department of Thermophysics and Building Structures.
Considering the experience of training specialists in energy certification and inspection of engineering systems in buildings during the 2019-2020 academic year, a new master's educational program "Energy Efficiency of Buildings and Inspection of Engineering Systems" was launched at the Institute of Energy Efficiency and the Department of Thermal Engineering and Energy Saving. At the end of 2020, the first graduation of master's students from this educational program took place.
