The official name of the department "Structural Mechanics" at the Kyiv Engineering Hydromelioration Institute (KMI) was approved by order No. 17 on February 6, 1931. The first mention of the department of structural mechanics in the documents of the Rivne Regional State Archive is in the order of the KMI director dated September 21, 1930. According to it, the department of structural mechanics consists of three instructors. By the decree of the institute director No. 75/14 dated December 1, 1930, "On the approval of departments" (as they were called then), ten such subdivisions and their leaders were defined with the distribution of subjects.
At the department "Structural Mechanics" – these are structural mechanics, theoretical mechanics, strength of materials, statics of structures, reinforced concrete, construction works and materials, foundations and bases, roads and bridges, engineering drawing with descriptive geometry, machine science, geodesy, engineering construction works, agricultural architecture, special design.
With the development of the institute, the administration made changes to the department name: from 1930 to 1937 – "Structural Mechanics"; 1938-1942 – "Structural Mechanics and Theoretical Mechanics"; after the return of KMI to Kyiv from 1943 to 1950 – "Statics of Structures"; from 1951 to 1961 – "Building Mechanics"; from 1962 to 1968 – "Resistance of Materials", "Theoretical Mechanics (including building mechanics)"; from 1969 to 1987 – "Structural Mechanics"; from 1988 – "Materials and Structural Mechanics"; from 2011 – "Materials, Theoretical and Structural Mechanics"; from 2013 – "Materials and Structural Mechanics"; from December 2014 – "Bridges and Tunnels, Resistance of Materials and Structural Mechanics", and from May 2025 – "Bridges, Tunnels and Structural Mechanics".
The first head of the department was Professor Danilevsky M.M., who was born in 1879. He graduated from three higher educational institutions in Kyiv. In 1938, he received the academic title of associate professor. As an instructor, he worked in various positions, including professor, from 1925 until retirement in 1957. His main research focus was related to the calculation of retaining walls. He worked at the department for 27 years.
From September 31, 1949, to April 30, 1955, the department was headed by associate professor, PhD, later Dr. of Sciences Kolenchuk K.I., and in 1957-1958 – associate professor Yankovych B.M. During the Rivne period of the university's development, the following subjects were taught at the department: "Resistance of Materials", "Structural Mechanics", "Theoretical Mechanics". The department was headed by: PhD, associate professor Barg A.Ya. from 22.09.1959 to 20.02.1962; PhD, associate professor Vainberg I.R. from 08.03.1962 to 30.06.1972; PhD, associate professor Harpf S.Y. from 07.12.1962 to 03.12.1975; PhD, associate professor Mykhailyshchev V.Ya. from 18.12.1975 to 28.09.1983; PhD, associate professor Astakhov M.V. from 28.09.1983 to 19.06.1987; PhD, associate professor Trubiy V.A. from 31.08.1972 to 01.07.1973; PhD, associate professor Konovalюк D.M. from 01.07.1973 to 02.07.1984; PhD, associate professor Andrushkov V.I. from 09.07.1984 to 14.02.1994 and from 30.06.1996 to 26.12.2000; professor, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Shulha M.O., known in Ukraine and far beyond its borders, a scientist who made significant contributions to the development of micromechanics of irregular composite thin-walled structures, from 30.06.1996 to 29.12.2000; PhD, associate professor Moshynskyi S.I. from 29.12.2000 to 09.01.2003, and from 09.01.2003 – Doctor of Sciences, professor, academician of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine Trach V.M.
On May 28, 2015, by the decision of the Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of UKRAINE, at the National University of Water Management and Nature Management, a master's program in the department of bridges and tunnels, resistance of materials and structural mechanics was opened based on the educational and qualification level of "Bachelor" in the specialty "CONSTRUCTION AND CIVIL ENGINEERING" with a specialization in "BRIDGES AND TRANSPORT TUNNELS".
On June 12, 2025, the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance of Ukraine issueda certificate of accreditationof the educational and professional program "BRIDGES AND TRANSPORT TUNNELS" in the specialty G19 "Construction and Civil Engineering", No. 13835, dated 12.06.2025.
