The department's staff addresses fundamental and applied problems related to the development and improvement of theories and methods for calculating the strength and stability of elements of modern structures used in construction, machine engineering, and aviation and space technology. Research is conducted on flat and spatial structural elements made of homogeneous and multilayer shells of revolution with complex shapes, panels, and plates made of composite materials, which are characterized by significant anisotropy of physical properties.
Main research directions:
At the request of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, under the guidance of Prof. Trach V.M., the department's staff carried out scientific programs on the following research topics: I-3 'Development of theoretical foundations for the calculation of statically indeterminate structures made of composite materials under different loading modes' (State registration No. 0101U001892), I-59 'Scientific and technical aspects of the development of mathematical models and the implementation of calculation methods for structures made of composite materials based on them' (State registration No. 0199U001924), I-17 'Development of nonlinear theory and construction of methods for solving stability problems of layered shells of complex geometry' (State registration No. 0104U003125), I-28 'Development of a mixed variational principle and methods for solving nonlinear problems in the mechanics of composite shells' (State registration No. 0107U004177), I-60 'Solving problems of nonlinear mechanics of anisotropic composite and nanocomposite shells of revolution in refined formulations' (State registration No. 0113U004051).
In the post-war period, the Departments of Strength of Materials and Construction Mechanics employed four doctors of technical and physical-mathematical sciences, 28 candidates of technical sciences. Five doctoral and ten candidate theses were prepared for defense and defended. Five monographs were published, eight contractual and five state budget works were completed. Five author certificates were obtained, and more than 1000 scientific articles were published.
Since 2010, a postgraduate program in 'Construction Mechanics' and a scientific laboratory 'Applied Mechanics' have been functioning at the department.
The department of bridges, tunnels, and construction mechanics has student scientific clubs.
