The history of the electric power direction in the university began in 1930, when the Department of Hydraulics was established at the Kyiv Engineering-Melioration Institute, where Professor Ilchenko V.I. taught the course 'Elements of Electrical Engineering and Electrification of Agriculture.'
The separate department 'Electrical Engineering and Automation' first appeared in 1959, when the Kyiv Engineering-Melioration Institute was transferred to Rivne, receiving the name Ukrainian Institute of Water Management Engineers. The department was headed by Associate Professor Shelemetyev H.M. Until 1988, the department was a general engineering one. During 1980-1990, the department was headed by PhD, Associate Professor Lozin B.A. Since 1989, the department became a graduating one, starting the training of specialists in automation of hydro-melioration systems. The department continues to teach courses related to electrical engineering and power supply to students of other specialties. Since 1990, the head of the department has been Professor Bakhovets B.A., who continues the development of the methodological and laboratory base for teaching electrical engineering courses. Training of bachelors, specialists, and masters in automation and computer-integrated technologies is carried out, with a graduate school operating at the department. After reorganization during 2011-2013, the department was named 'Automation, Electrical Engineering, and Computer-Integrated Technologies', and the head was elected PhD, Professor Drevetzky V.V. Traditionally, courses such as theoretical fundamentals of electrical engineering, electrical machines, electrical engineering and electromechanics, automated electric drive, microprocessor technology were taught at the department.
In 2013, a bachelor's program in the direction of preparation 6.050701 'Electrical Engineering and Electrical Technologies' was licensed and the first group of electrical students was admitted. Since 2016, enrollment has been carried out for the specialty 141 'Electrical Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electromechanics'. In 2016, preparation for candidates of the second (master's) level of higher education was initiated. In 2024, an educational and scientific program for the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education for the preparation of doctors of philosophy was initiated. During this period, specialized subjects for electrical students were taught at a high scientific and pedagogical level by professors, associate professors, and creative teachers from the Department of Automation, Electrical Engineering, and Computer-Integrated Technologies. The electrical power direction of the department was particularly emphasized by: Professors Drevetzky V.V., Vasylets S.V., Rudyik A.V., Malanchuk Y.Z., Associate Professors Litkovets S.P., Artyukh N.I., Kилимчук A.V., Senior Lecturer Syryk R.Y.
Modern equipment was provided for new educational laboratories for electrical students: No. 502 Educational Laboratory of Microprocessor Protection Devices, No. 508 Educational Laboratory of Power Supply Systems, No. 509 Educational Laboratory of High-Voltage Equipment and Electric Networks. The leadership of the university, institute, and department teachers constantly work to improve the material base.
The hydroenergy direction is one of the oldest at the university. The department for training specialists in the hydroenergy direction was established as part of the Kyiv Hydromelioration Institute by the order of the All-Union Committee for Higher Education at the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR No. 103 on January 10, 1938, under the name 'Department of Water Energy Utilization and Pumping Stations.' Over the years of its existence, the department has had, in addition to the mentioned, five other names: 'Utilization of Water Energy and Pumping Installations', 'Utilization of Water Energy', 'Utilization of Water Energy and Pumping Stations', 'Utilization of Water Energy and Hydraulic Machines', 'Hydroenergy and Hydraulic Machines', 'Hydroenergy, Thermal Energy, and Hydraulic Machines.'
The achievements of the department are closely related to its personnel - professionals of the highest caliber and vivid personalities. The first head of the department was academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, PhD, Professor Sukhomel H.Y. In subsequent years, this position was held by associate professors and candidates of technical sciences Kudin S.M., Maksymov I.H., Dubrovskyi B.K., Nazarov M.T., Krysenkov M.I., professor, candidate of technical sciences Lutaiev V.V., doctor of technical sciences, professor O.A. Ryabenko.
The faculty of the department has for many years ensured the training of highly qualified specialists for such important fields as hydroenergy, thermal energy, nuclear energy, hydro-melioration, water supply, and others.
At the department, renowned scientists founded six scientific schools:
• Associate Professor, PhD Maksymov I.H. studied the operation of compensating reservoirs and hydroelectric power stations, and prepared a monograph 'Compensating Reservoirs of Hydroelectric Power Stations' (1960). Under his leadership, candidate dissertations were defended by Lutaiev V.V. (1968), Tsyutsyura R.M. (1971), and continuing their research direction, Nesterенко V.P. (1989);
• Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Zavhorodny P.F. studied heat and mass transfer processes in solid bodies. Under his guidance, candidate dissertations were defended by Tymeychuk O.Y. (1993) and Smalko M.V. (2001);
• Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Lozbin V.I. worked on creating analytical and numerical methods for calculating thermoelectric and thermoelectric emission systems for direct conversion of thermal energy into electrical energy; developed methods for measuring thermophysical characteristics of materials;
• Associate Professor, PhD Nazarov M.T. researched unsteady fluid flow in open channels, operation of debris retention devices in pumping stations, and modes of vacuum systems, published a textbook 'Hydroelectric Stations. Multifactorial Problems' (1975), and a monograph 'Vacuum Installations of Automated Pumping Stations of Today and Tomorrow' (1999). Under his guidance, candidate dissertation was defended by Filipovich Yu.Y. (1999);
• Associate Professor, PhD Krysenkov M.I. studied uneven water flows in the water conduits of hydroenergy installations, operation and calculations of compensating reservoirs of hydroelectric power stations, calculations of water-air reservoirs. Under his guidance, dissertations were written and successfully defended by Veremchuk A.I., Sunichuk S.V., Yakovleva O.M.;
• Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Ryabenko O.A. dedicated his scientific work to the study of near-critical flows. A number of scientific papers were published by him in the USA, Tunisia, Algeria, totaling over 300 scientific and methodological works. Under the guidance of Professor Ryabenko O.A. dissertations were defended by Chernobyl O.E., Yakovleva O.M., Timoshchuk V.S., Halich O.O., Poplavskyi D.M., Semenukha A.V., Gerba O.V.
The department has, over different years, employed and continues to employ renowned scientists, researchers, and investigators. Among them is the outstanding scientist Pretro H.O. – author of the monographs 'Special Types of Hydroelectric Stations', 'Special Types of Hydroenergy Installation Structures', 'Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Stations.'
A significant contribution to this direction was made by PhD, Associate Professor Solnyshkov V.A. He led a seminar on hydromechanics for graduate students and researchers at UIIW (1971-1973). He published a monograph 'Research on the Suction Pipes of Hydroturbines.'
Dubrovskyi B.K. worked until 1965 as the chief engineer of a hydroelectric station, after which he moved to Rivne for teaching work, where he was elected head of the Department of Water Energy Utilization and Hydraulic Machines, as well as dean of the hydro-technical faculty.
While working in this direction, PhD, Associate Professor Svinaryov H.A. published a book 'Horizontal Capsule Hydro Turbines of Axial Type', and Chebotaryov V.I. published such works as 'Hydrological and Water-Energy Calculations of Rural Hydroelectric Stations', 'Hydrometric Structures'. Lysovenko Y.P. studied hydroenergy installations designed for the automation of irrigation systems, seeking ways to improve low-head hydropower stations.
Kabakov M.I. worked at the largest oil refining and chemical enterprises, defended a candidate dissertation on the topic 'Research on the Hydrodynamics of Industrial-Scale Packaged Mass Exchange Devices.'
Osadchuk Volodymyr Oleksandrovych – a construction engineer by profession. Since 1977, he has been the director of the 'Ukrhydroproject' institute. From 1994 to 2009 – the general director of JSC 'Ukrhydroproject'. Under his leadership, projects for DniproHES-2, DniesterHES-1 and HES-2, the largest pumped storage hydropower stations in Europe, Dniester and Tashlytsia PSHPS, Kaniv PSHPS, Chernobyl NPP, and the energy development concept in Ukraine were executed. He also completed projects for 12 hydropower stations in Vietnam and Laos. A full member of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine (1994), member of the International Hydropower Association (1996), member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, Professor of the Department of Hydroenergy and Hydromachines at NUWGP. Honored Energy Engineer of Ukraine (2003). Author of 42 certificates and patents for inventions, 38 scientific papers. Laureate of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR named after B.S. Vedeneyev, laureate of many assemblies of business circles of Ukraine and France.
Osadchyi Serhii Dmytrovych graduated from UIIW in 1984 in the specialty 'Hydrotechnical Construction of River Structures and Hydroelectric Stations' and was sent to work at 'Ukrhydroproject' named after S.Ya. Zhuk, where he rose from an engineer to the general director of PJSC 'Ukrhydroproject'. Under his participation and leadership, technical solutions were developed and implemented during the design and construction of Tashlytsia PSHPS, part of the Southern Ukrainian Energy Complex, Kaniv and Dniester PSHPS, reconstruction of the Dnipro cascade hydropower stations in Ukraine, etc. He has author certificates and a number of publications in the periodical press. Awarded the mark 'Distinguished Energy Engineer of Ukraine', Honorary Certificate of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine. In 2012, he was awarded the title 'Honored Energy Engineer of Ukraine.'
Associate Professors of the Department of Hydroenergy, Thermal Energy, and Hydraulic Machines, Deputy Directors of the Institute of Water Management Makovsky Anatolii Mykhailovych and Filipovich Yurii Yuriyovych opened the specialty 'Hydroenergy' at NUWGP in 2000.
Associate Professor of the Department of Hydroenergy, Thermal Energy, and Hydraulic Machines, PhD Filipovich Yurii Yuriyovych was deputy director of the Institute of Water Management from 2000 to 2004, and from 2004 to 2013 – deputy dean of the faculty of hydrotechnical construction and hydroenergy. During this time, he carried out licensing and accreditation of the specialty 'Hydroenergy' at the educational-qualification levels of bachelor and master, and developed Educational and Professional Programs and Educational-qualification characteristics of the specialty.
The head of the Department of Hydroenergy, Thermal Energy, and Hydraulic Machines at NUWGP, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Ryabenko O.A. and PhD and Associate Professor Filipovich Yu.Y. were part of the Scientific and Methodological Subcommission for the specialty 145 Hydroenergy of the Scientific and Methodological Commission No. 9 on Engineering of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for the development of Standards for higher education at the first (bachelor's), second (master's), and third (doctoral) levels in the field of knowledge 14 'Electrical Engineering' for specialty 145 'Hydroenergy'. Professor Ryabenko O.A. is a member of the sectoral expert council of NAZYAVO ─ HER-14.
Filipovich Oleg Yuriyovych – a graduate of our department, completed a postgraduate program at the Department of Hydroenergy and Hydraulic Machines. Currently, he works as the director of the Branch of the Consortium 'Scientific and Production Association 'Ukrhydroenergo' in Novodnistrovsk.
The educational activities of the thermal energy direction were managed by Professor, PhD Prykhodko M.A. during 2003-2008, who is a leading specialist at the Institute of Hydromechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and published a monograph 'Hydrothermodynamics of Bubble Gas-Pseudoliquid Systems.'
During the period of 2008-2012, the department was led by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Lozbin V.I., a heat physics specialist who previously worked at the Sukhum Physical and Technical Institute (Georgia, 1965-1983), National University 'Lviv Polytechnic', and headed the Department of 'Thermal Engineering and Thermal Electrical Stations' at Lublin Polytechnic (Lublin, Poland).
Significant efforts to create a thermal energy direction for training highly qualified specialists were made by the honored inventor of Ukraine (with over 300 protective documents), author of 15 textbooks and over 210 scientific articles and 45 methodological works, PhD, Associate Professor Strilets V.M. He accomplished a particularly large volume of work before the licensing and accreditation of the specialty 'Thermal Energy'. Under his guidance, all educational and methodological documentation for the specialty was created, a laboratory for heat and mass transfer with computer laboratory setups was organized, and equipment for a laboratory of non-traditional energy sources was developed.
Professor, PhD Kochmarsky V.Z. is a member of the Ukrainian Physical Society, corresponding member of the International Academy of Ecology and Life Safety (MANEB), and an academician of the Ukrainian Oil and Gas Academy. In 1983, he organized the Physical and Technological Laboratory for Water Systems, of which he is currently the scientific director. The laboratory created and implemented unique magnetic devices with a capacity of 20,000 and 2,000 m3/hour for anti-scaling treatment of cooling waters at Rivne and Khmelnytskyi NPPs. Together with laboratory staff Gayeisky V.R., he developed and manufactured a functioning model of a multiparameter water analyzer, on which a number of unique experiments were performed regarding the exchange of CO2 between the water system during the crystallization of calcium carbonate. Under the guidance of Kochmarsky V.Z., four dissertations for the degree of candidate of technical sciences have been defended, and he is the author of more than 300 scientific and methodological works, including 28 author certificates and patents and 40 publications in foreign international journals, of which 20 are cited in Scopus and WOS of Science. He is the author of three monographs, one of which was published by the British Library. The research directions include: theory and practice of filters for cleaning water systems from suspended materials and oil products, statistical theory of magnetic filtration, expertise in magnetic treatment of water systems, theory and practice of electrolysis disinfection systems for technical and drinking water. Kochmarsky V.Z. proposed a scheme for operational control and detection of illegal withdrawal of oil products from the pipeline, which was successfully implemented and led to the identification of offenders and a reduction in the theft of oil products.
Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Voloshchuk V.A. is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers and coordinator of international projects of the European Union 'Introduction of Third Cycle Education - Doctoral Program in Renewable Energy and Ecotechnology' and the Swedish Institute 'Experience Exchange on Sustainable Development of Energy Supply Systems in the Baltic Region.'
Associate Professor, PhD Tymeychuk O.Y. is the author of more than 140 scientific and educational-methodical works, including 6 patents, 5 textbooks, and 3 regulatory documents. His scientific work is devoted to mathematical modeling of heat transfer processes.
The scientific research work of the department was carried out in two directions: improving designs, calculation methods, and designing hydroenergy facilities and hydraulic machines, as well as enhancing hydraulic and heat engineering calculations of installations and devices for energy purposes.
Employees of the Department of Hydroenergy, Thermal Energy, and Hydraulic Machines participated in the work of interdepartmental commissions of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine to assess the condition of hydraulic structures and the corresponding equipment of the Dnipro and Dniester cascades of PJSC 'Ukrhydroenergo' in 2009, 2014, 2019. They performed state budget and commercial contract work at the request of ministries, departments, and organizations such as the Ministry of Energy, State Water Agency, Ministry of Education and Science, PJSC 'Ukrhydroenergo', PJSC 'Ukrhydroproject', LLC 'Hydrotechproekt', JSC 'Bank Communications', LLC 'Ukrtransrail', LLC 'Emza' regarding the scientific and technical problems related to the operation of the Dniester PSHPS, Dniester HES-1, Chortoryisk (r. Sluch), Myhiyivska (r. Southern Bug), and other hydroelectric stations.
Active cooperation with the Norwegian company AICE Hydro (Oslo, Norway) in the direction of utilizing promising small hydroenergy facilities in Ukraine. AICE Hydro is a company working on the development of effective and environmentally friendly small hydropower stations in Ukraine, combining Norwegian and Ukrainian competencies in the field of hydroenergy.
