The role of universities in the post-war reconstruction of Ukrainian hydropower

From March 25 to December 31, 2025, participation in thegrant project "The Role of Universities in the Post-War Reconstruction of Ukrainian Hydropower"together with the Czech Technical University in Prague under the program from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic "Strengthening the Professional Potential of State Universities of Ukraine in 2025", n° 25-PKVV-UM-006.
The first event within the project was a working visit of Associate Professor Halych Oksana from May 17 to 23 to the Czech Technical University in Prague, where a meeting of representatives of Ukrainian universities took place (National University of Water Management and Nature Management, Rivne, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Lviv, National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute", Kharkiv, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, Ivano-Frankivsk). During the meetings, issues related to the training of highly qualified specialists for the hydropower sector of Ukraine, and opportunities to expand international scientific cooperation through the preparation of joint research projects for international competitions and grants were discussed.
In addition, the participants visited the hydraulic laboratory of the Czech
Technical University in Prague, small hydropower plants near Prague, and a drinking water treatment station, which has a museum created on its basis.
The second event was a round table "The Role of Universities in the Post-War Reconstruction of the Hydropower Sector of Ukraine", held at Lviv Polytechnic National University from July 14 to 17. Participants included representatives of universities that train specialists for the hydropower sector (NUWGP, NTU "KPI", KNUBA, IFNTUOG), as well as leading hydropower and energy companies such as PrJSC "Ukrhydroenergo", PrJSC "Ukrhydroproject", LLC NTC "Enpaselktro", Lviv Water Utility, NGO "Geothermal Ukraine", and others.
At the round table, pressing issues of hydropower under conditions of full-scale war, the shortage of highly qualified personnel, and the requirements for future specialists were discussed. The role of universities in educating and training specialists demanded in the labor market was outlined and discussed.
The third event was a "Summer School & Workshop" on the topic "From Hydrology to Hydropower: Field Measurements and Calculation of Key Parameters" at NUWGP from September 15 to 18. Participants included not only representatives of universities that train specialists for the hydropower sector (NUWGP, NTU "KPI", KNUBA, IFNTUOG) but also students from these universities.
During the summer school, teachers and students had the opportunity to visit a small hydropower station in the Rivne region, take field measurements of key hydrological and energy parameters, and process the measured data. Strengthening professional potential in the field of numerical modeling of flows II

From March 7 to December 31, 2024, participation in the grant project "Strengthening Professional Potential in the Field of Numerical Modeling of Flows II" together with the Czech Technical University in Prague under the program from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic "Strengthening the Professional Potential of State Universities of Ukraine in 2024", n° 24-PKVV-UM-009.
As part of the project, department staff (Ryabenko Olexandr, Sunichuk Serhiy, Halych Oksana, Tymoshchuk Volodymyr) were on a working visit to the Czech Technical University in Prague from June 8 to 16. During the visit, discussions were held regarding potential joint scientific and educational directions between NUWGP and CTU. In addition, lecturers deepened their skills in modeling in HEC RAS and Matlab and visited several low-head hydropower stations near Prague.
Additionally, as part of the project, a university competition for scientific works of young researchers "Modelling in Water Engineering for Solving Current and Future Issues" was announced. The winners of the competition were Tsukh Stanislav (4th-year student of the specialty "Hydropower"), Pankuvych Maksym (4th-year student of the specialty "Hydropower"), and Kyryliuk Dmytro (3rd-year student of the specialty "Hydropower").

Strengthening professional potential in the field of numerical modeling of flows

From July 1 to December 31, 2023, participation in the grant project "Strengthening Professional Potential in the Field of Numerical Modeling of Flows" together with the Czech Technical University in Prague under the program from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic "Strengthening the Professional Potential of State Universities of Ukraine and Moldova", n° 23-PKVV-UM-5. As part of the project, department staff (Ryabenko Olexandr, Sunichuk Serhiy, Halych Oksana, Tymoshchuk Volodymyr, Zaichuk Roman) were on a working visit to Prague from September 16 to 22, 2023. During the visit, Czech colleagues shared advanced technologies regarding modernization and technical equipment of the university's hydraulic laboratory and conducting physical modeling. Excursions were organized to the pumped storage power station Shtekhovice, small hydropower plants Troya and Jesenice, and the Czech-American engineering company MAVEL supplying equipment for HPPs to study the specifics of equipment operation, station capacities, and nuances of energy transmission to the grid. NUWGP specialists had a unique opportunity to gain experience from the Czech Republic in implementing innovative energy projects. Additionally, training on the use of the HEC-RAS software package took place, during which department lecturers successfully completed a series of tasks in 1D and 2D modeling, resulting in receiving appropriate certificates.

Programme to Enhance Academic Collaboration for Enabling Regenerative Reconstruction in Ukraine

From July 17 to 21, 2023, department staff (Sunichuk Serhiy, Halych Oksana, Zaichuk Roman) participated in a summer school within the framework of the Programme to Enhance Academic Collaboration for Enabling Regenerative Reconstruction in Ukraine (PEACE-R2UK), Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

International mobility of research, technical and administrative staff of research organizations 

From January 16 to June 30, 2023, Associate Professor Halych Oksana was undergoing an internship at the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic) as part of the program "International mobility of research, technical and administrative staff of research organizations" No. CZ.02.2.69/0.0/0.0/18 053/0016980.
