The biography of the Department of Labor Protection and Life Safety began in 1973 under the name 'Department of Labor Protection and Ergonomics'. In 1987, it was renamed to 'Department of Labor Protection and Environmental Safety', and in 1988 – to 'Ecology and Labor Protection'. In 1995, according to the law of Ukraine 'On Labor Protection', for the first time in four higher educational institutions in Ukraine, training for specialists in labor protection and ecology in construction began. The department became a graduating one and in 1996 received the name 'Labor Protection and Ecology in Construction'. Since 2004, the department has been named 'Labor Protection and Life Safety'.
The heads of the department at different times were well-known scientists and methodologists with significant production experience: Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor S.V. Morozov; Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor V.M. Yaroshevskaya; Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor P.M. Dubinsky; Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor I.P. Gonik; Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor V.O. Olivievich; Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor T.M. Kirienko; Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor M.O. Klimeko; Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor M.M. Girol; Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor V.Y. Chaban; Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V.L. Filipchuk. Since 2022, the head of the department has been Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor O.M. Kukhniuk.
Considering the unfavorable trends in the increase of injuries, the intensification of technogenic and social threats and challenges, the Department of Labor Protection and Life Safety was the first in the Western region of Ukraine to start activities for licensing and subsequent accreditation of the field of training 'Labor Protection' and the specialty 'Labor Protection in Construction'. From 1995 to 2002, the department produced specialists in the specialty 'Labor Protection and Ecology in Construction', and from 2001 to 2012, it trained and graduated specialists with educational qualification levels 'bachelor' and 'specialist' in the specialization 'Labor Protection in Water Management'. Since 2009, the department has been training specialists in the specialty 'Labor Protection'.
The composition of the department is formed from specialists of various specialties: construction engineers, hydraulic engineers, mechanical engineers, mining engineers, fire safety engineers, and specialists with significant production experience in different industries. The staff of the department represents a combination of the experience of older teachers and the innovation of younger teachers. Currently, nine teachers work in the department, including one Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and eight Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors. This allows the department to effectively work in all areas of educational, methodological, and scientific activities. The teaching staff regularly enhances their qualifications and receives a second higher education in the profile of their specialty.
The teachers of the department have participated in scientific and technical expertise of criminal cases opened by prosecutors of various levels for violations of labor protection requirements at industrial enterprises, in scientific research on issues of labor protection, fire, and environmental safety, which allows providing students with information and knowledge regarding new scientific and practical developments on these issues.
The department has established close scientific and methodological ties with the Western Interregional Department of the State Labor Service of Ukraine, the LLC 'Rivne Expert and Technical Center', the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Rivne region, the regional executive directorate of the Social Insurance Fund (now merged with the Pension Fund), and the Training and Methodological Center for Civil Protection and Life Safety of Rivne region.
In cooperation with the employees of these institutions, educational and familiarization activities, lectures, practical classes are held, including the use of modern equipment from these institutions, methodical literature, scientific articles, and educational manuals are published, which ensures a high level of professionalism of graduates. These organizations and institutions are also bases for practice for students in the specialty 'Labor Protection' ('Civil Security').
Students of the department regularly participate in nationwide Olympiads in academic disciplines ('Life Safety', 'Labor Protection', and 'Civil Protection'), in student scientific works competitions, including international ones, and win prizes. Over four years, the department organized the second stage of nationwide student Olympiads in the discipline 'Life Safety'.
Every year, the teachers of the department participate in the implementation of the departmental scientific themes regarding the improvement of scientific and applied foundations of technical systems safety and protection of a person and the environment in a technogenic environment, resulting in articles being published in professional and international scientific journals, monographs, and educational manuals. Thus, the department's teachers have prepared and published 42 textbooks and manuals, 18 monographs, more than 500 scientific papers, received about 100 patents for inventions, and produced 422 copies of educational and methodological literature. Four teachers of the department have a certificate in foreign language proficiency at the B2 level.
The department collaborates widely with various organizations and enterprises in Ukraine on issues of creating safe technologies and equipment for the purification of natural and wastewater, evaluating energy efficiency of buildings and structures, as well as with departments of relevant profiles of leading higher educational institutions in Ukraine. Such collaboration allows the introduction of innovative scientific and pedagogical research and modern European legislative documents on safety and hygiene at work and risk-oriented approaches into the educational process.
