The department was established as a graduating department for training engineers in construction with a specialty in 'Urban Construction and Economy' on July 1, 1994, at the Faculty of Construction of the Ukrainian Institute of Engineers of Water Management (now NUWGP). From 1995 to 2000, the department was the leading one within the newly established Faculty of Urban Construction and Economy, and from 2000 to 2002, it became part of the Institute of Water Management at the university (then RDTU, later UDWGP). Since 2002, the department has been part of the faculty, and since 2013, it has been part of the Scientific and Educational Institute of Construction and Architecture. Currently, the department is a graduating one in the field of 'Urban Construction and Economy,' which has been accredited at the 4th level for training master's students (since 2002).
The founder and first head of the department was Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Architecture, full member of the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture, Doctor of Architecture, Professor Kuzmych Orlyana Ivanivna.
During the existence of the department, it was headed by: Doctor of Architecture, Professor Kuzmych Orlyana Ivanivna (1994 – 2001); Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Romashko Vasyl Mykolayovych (2002 – 2007); Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine and MANEB Tkachuk Oleksandr Andriivych (since 2008).
