DAAD
DAAD — German Academic Exchange Service.
It is one of the largest organizations that funds international exchange for students and researchers. Since its establishment in 1925, around 3 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received funding from DAAD. It is a registered association whose members include German higher education institutions and student organizations. The organization's activities extend far beyond simply providing grants and scholarships. DAAD supports the internationalization of German universities, promotes the study of the German language and culture abroad, assists Global South countries in creating and improving their higher education systems, and advises decision-makers on education, foreign science policy, and development policy.
The association's budget is primarily formed from federal funding from various ministries, especially the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, as well as from European Union funds and a number of companies, organizations, and foreign governments. The DAAD headquarters is located in Bonn, but the association also has a representative office in Germany's capital, Berlin. It maintains contacts and provides advice to its main partner countries on all continents through a network of regional offices, information centers, and information points.
In 2023, DAAD provided funding for over 140,000 German and international scholars worldwide. Funding offers range from a year abroad for undergraduate students to doctoral programs, from internships to guest lectures, as well as from information-gathering visits to assistance in establishing new universities. Funding decisions are made by voluntary independent selection committees. Members of the selection committees are appointed by the DAAD executive committee according to specific appointment principles.
