The history of the department's development began on May 15, 2013, at the National University of Water Management and Nature Conservation.

The department's teachers make efforts to provide students with solid knowledge in their chosen field, teach them to apply it in practice, conduct experiments and observations, be able to draw scientifically grounded conclusions, work creatively, and independently acquire knowledge. The Department of "Theory and Methodology of Physical Education" carries out the following main types of activities: educational, methodological, scientific-methodical, and sports.

The forms and methods of teaching and instruction in the department's educational programs are described in the Regulation on the organization of the educational process at NUVHP and the syllabuses of educational components. Higher education seekers study in full-time and part-time forms of education. The main forms of organizing the educational process for a specific educational program are classroom work (lecture, practical (seminar), laboratory classes), independent and individual work, consultations, practical training during internships, and control measures – current and final control. The main teaching methods include general scientific methods of cognition and research activities – testing, surveys, observations, measurements; general didactic and sports training methods; visual, practical (conversation, discussion, storytelling, explanation, report, practical performance of exercises, express survey during practical classes, etc.), which are regulated by the Regulation on Forms of Training, Forms of Organizing the Educational Process, and Types of Educational Classes at NUVHP. In order to prepare competitive specialists in the field of physical culture and sports, the department closely collaborates with employers (there are existing contracts for cooperation) – SDYUSHOR No. 2, DUSSH No. 4 and No. 5, Rivne Gymnasium No. 10, Rivne Lyceums No. 13 and No. 26, ZDO "Center Pahynet", KZ Rivne Regional Center for Physical Culture and Sports for the Disabled "Invasport", KU "Rivne Inclusive Resource Center" of the Rivne City Council, and KU "Rivne Inclusive Resource Center No. 2", among others. Employers are the heads of internship bases.

Ensuring the achievement of practical learning outcomes is carried out using a powerful material and technical base: – sports halls (sports games – 648 m2, wrestling – 123 m2, athletic gymnastics – 150 m2, table tennis – 67 m2, for special medical groups – 2 units, athletic manege – 126 m2); – a stadium with running tracks; – a complex of sports grounds: football fields with synthetic coverings – 2 units, a gymnastic area with equipment, a football field – 1 unit; – a rehabilitation center; – laboratories: sensory motor development, inclusive education, therapeutic massage, Eastern health methods, anatomy and physiology, physiotherapy, laboratories for the development of fine motor skills and psychological rehabilitation.

The department fruitfully collaborates with higher education institutions in Ukraine and Poland. In particular, with such well-known higher education institutions in Poland: the Academy of Physical Education and Sport named after Jerzy Sniadecki in Gdansk, the Humanities and Natural Sciences University named after Jan Dlugosz in Czestochowa, Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, and the Academy of Applied Sciences named after Vincent Pol in Lublin.

Educational and methodological support in the training of specialists is a determining factor in the quality of education, and therefore is a priority direction of the work of the Department of Theory and Methodology of Physical Education. The methodological support of the department includes textbooks and manuals endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as well as methodological developments authored by the department staff. Open classes of teachers and the results of mutual visits are regularly discussed and analyzed.

The prospects for the development of the Department of Theory and Methodology of Physical Education are: – further improvement of educational programs considering labor market demands, constant monitoring, establishment of more fruitful collaboration with employers and stakeholders; – expansion of opportunities for academic mobility for higher education seekers and scientific-pedagogical workers for professional development based on advanced European practices: organization and conduct of master classes and trainings; – to improve the practical component of the educational process, purchase sports and wellness equipment; – enhancement of scientific research work for partnerships with foreign higher education institutions.
