The Department of Geology and Hydrology is located in building 5 of NUWGP
The Department of Geology and Hydrology is designed to educate higher education seekers in specializations 103 "Earth Sciences" (bachelor's, master's) and 106 "Geography" (bachelor's), as well as to conduct scientific research in the fields of geological exploration, hydrology, and constructive geography. The department comprises 2 professors, 4 associate professors, and 2 senior lecturers. Areas of professional activity for graduates include: searching for and exploring solid mineral resources (amber, ores, and construction stones); underground waters; oil and gas fields; engineering-geological surveys for construction; geological mapping; geological support for mineral extraction; investigations of precious stones; studies of hydrometeorological conditions; hydrological and hydrometric observations and calculations of surface and drainage runoff; maintenance of hydroposts on rivers and hydraulic structures; management of water and mineral resources, geographic monitoring; geographic forecasting; environmental protection in subsoil use.
Beneficiaries of the scientific and educational influence of the department are:the group of companies "Amber-Galbin", Rivne Comprehensive Geological Party of the State Enterprise "Ukrainian Geological Company", KP "Volynpryrodresurs" and other subsoil users.
International cooperation of the departmentestablished with the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics, and Environmental Protection of the Mining and Metallurgy Academy named after S. Stashitsa (Poland).
History of the department
By the early 1920s, there was a need to organize a scientific unit that would train qualified specialists in hydrology for technical schools, as well as study the hydrological regime of rivers. At that time, Kyiv had one of the best specialists in the country for studying surface and underground waters – Yevgeny Volodymyrovych Oppokov. He gathers the best specialists in hydrology, hydrogeology, soil science, and reclamation and opens the Department of Hydrology at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1922. The department remained part of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute until 1930. In 1926, staff of the department and its head Y.E. Oppokov organized the Research Institute of Water Management (now the Institute of Hydromechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). Until 1937, Y.E. Oppokov was the director of this institute while simultaneously remaining the head of the Department of Hydrology. In 1929, some staff members of the department began working in the independent Department of Hydrology organized by Y.E. Oppokov within the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. This department existed until 1934. In 1930, the Department of Hydrology from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was transferred to the Kyiv Engineering and Reclamation Institute, created on the basis of the Kyiv Reclamation Technical School. In 1937, the founder of the department and its head for all these years, Y.E. Oppokov, was repressed and died in 1938 in the GULAG camps. From 1937, Anatoliy Volodymyrovych Ohiievskyi (1894-1952), a doctor of technical sciences since 1936 and a professor since 1937, an outstanding hydrologist, headed the department. The Department of Hydrology resumed its functioning within the Kyiv Engineering and Reclamation Institute in 1944. From that time until the end of his life, it was led by A.V. Ohiievskyi. From 1952 to 1960, the department was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor A.V. Svyntsov, a well-known specialist in water management calculations. In 1953, the department participated in establishing the Ukrainian Regional Scientific Research Hydrometeorological Institute (UkrNDHM). Some department staff formed the core of the hydrological department of this institute.
In 1959, the Kyiv Engineering and Reclamation Institute was relocated to Rivne, where it was named the Ukrainian Institute of Water Engineers. The Department of Hydrology was renamed the Department of Hydrology and Hydrogeology. From 1961 to 1963, it was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor M.V. Lalykin. From 1963 to 1969, the department was led by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Ya.I. Marusenko. From 1974 to 1976, the department was again headed by M.V. Lalykin – a well-known specialist in maximum runoff and water balance. The main achievement of the department's activities during these years was the creation of methodologies for determining calculated hydrological and hydrogeological characteristics for reclamation construction and assessing the impact of reclamation on surface and underground runoff (Candidates of Technical Sciences, Associate Professors M.V. Lalykin, O.Z. Revera, Ya.I. Marusenko). From 1976 to 1987, the Department of Hydrology and Hydrogeology was headed by Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Associate Professor M.D. Budz, under whose leadership the impact of large-scale reclamation on surface and underground runoff was studied. From 1987 to 1992, the department was headed by Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor M.V. Korbutiak – a well-known specialist in channel processes and studying the influence of anthropogenic factors on surface runoff. From 1992 to 2002, the Department of Hydrology and Hydrogeology was again led by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor M.D. Budz. The main direction of the department's scientific work was the study of the conditions for forming surface and underground runoff and its qualitative and quantitative assessment under intensive and comprehensive anthropogenic load. Another important direction of scientific research became the assessment of engineering-geological conditions of built-up areas. Significant contributions to the development of hydrological and hydrogeological research during this period were made by associate professors, candidates of geographical sciences I.M. Korotun, Ya.O. Novosad, M.V. Korbutiak, I.I. Zaleskyi, associate professors, candidates of geological and mineralogical sciences I.M. Khudoshin, V.H. Melnychuk, associate professors, candidates of technical sciences V.H. Sorokin, P.D. Slyvka, O.P. Budz, O.D. Antonov. In 2002, the Department of Hydrology and Hydrogeology was renamed the Department of Water Management Ecology, Hydrology, and Natural Resource Use. It was headed by A.V. Yatsyk, a member-correspondent of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, doctor of technical sciences, professor, and honored scientist and technician of Ukraine. His scientific interests include water management ecology, natural reproduction, and sustainable development. The department launched scientific developments on water resource management and their optimal use. At the same time, traditional geological sciences research continued at the department. Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor M.D. Budz studied global climate change, developing standards for protecting structures from hazardous geological processes during design. Associate Professor, Candidate of Geographical Sciences I.I. Zaleskyi performed works on compiling a series legend for hydrogeological maps of Volyn-Podillia at a scale of 1:200000. Senior Lecturer, leading hydrogeologist H.I. Brovko conducted long-term monitoring of engineering-geological and hydrogeological studies, as well as compiling a cadastre of mineral water deposits and occurrences in Rivne and Volyn regions. Associate Professor, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences V.H. Melnychuk, in the position of head of the geological survey party and lead geologist (senior) of the Rivne Geological Expedition, participated in regional geological survey works, as well as in the search for copper deposits in Volyn. In 2013, due to the reorganization of the structure of NUWGP, the Department of Water Management Ecology, Hydrology, and Natural Resource Use was joined by the Department of Hydraulics. The transformed department was renamed the Department of Water Management Ecology, Hydrology, and Hydraulics, which was headed in 2014 by Associate Professor I.V. Hopchak, and from 2015 by Associate Professor M.V. Korbutiak. From these departments, the Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology was separated under the leadership of Doctor of Geological Sciences, Professor V.H. Melnychuk. The team of the newly created departments, having substantial intellectual potential of the teaching staff and a sufficient laboratory base, initiated university-specific preparation directions for specialists in “Geology” and “Hydrometeorology,” which have now become components of specialization 103 “Earth Sciences.” In 2017, due to the reorganization of the structure of the Institute of Water Management and Land Management, based on the Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology and the Department of Water Management Ecology, Hydrology, and Hydraulics, the Department of Geology and Hydrology was formed, which was headed by Doctor of Geological Sciences, Professor V.H. Melnychuk.
