The Department of Geodesy and Cartography is one of the oldest in the university. Its origins are inseparable from the beginning of our educational institution's creation. Although there was no structural unit such as a department at that time, geodetic disciplines were already being taught. Later, immediately after the merger of the Kyiv Agricultural Institute (KSGI) with the Kyiv Melioration and Land Management Polytechnic (KMZP) on September 22, 1928, a geodesic cabinet was established, where classes on the subject 'Geodesy with Practical Exercises' were held (lecturers – Chudinov, Kendra, Kondakov, Tseslinsky, Gaponov). After the organization of the Kyiv Engineering-Meliorative Institute, according to order No.1 from the director of KIMI dated January 1, 1931, the geodesic cabinet had three full-time positions (head – Professor M.I. Tovstolis, associate professor – I.I. Gaponov, assistant – O.F. Savitsky). The lecturers taught disciplines 'Geodesy', 'Topographic Drawing', 'Encyclopedia of Melioration'. In the same year, based on the geodesic cabinet, the Geodesic-Mathematics Department was created (order No.17 dated November 6, 1931), which was responsible for the disciplines 'Geodesy', 'Topographic Drawing', 'Mathematics with Variational Statistics', 'Physics'. From 1938 to 1959, the institute, which underwent several name changes due to reorganizations, already had a department of geodesy. Its heads, in addition to Dr. of Technical Sciences, Professor M.I. Tovstolis, were Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor M.H. Viduyev and Cand. of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor I.P. Kozmin. The teaching staff was small and over different years consisted of 2-4 positions.
After the transfer of the Kyiv Institute of Water Management Engineers (KIIVG) to Rivne in 1959 and its renaming to the Ukrainian Institute of Water Management Engineers (UIIVG), the department received the name of Engineering Geodesy. Its heads over different years included Cand. of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor I.P. Kozmin, Associate Professor M.I. Ivanov, Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor T.S. Danilenko, Senior Lecturer P.R. Havrylenko, Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor I.V. Khokhlov, Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor M.A. Kutseryb, Cand. of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor P.Ye. Butenko, Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor H.H. Lebid, and Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor P.H. Chernyaga. The department's staff gradually increased (1959 – 3 positions, 1965 – 7 positions, 1987 – 14 positions).
In connection with the opening of the specialty 'Land Management' in 1992, the Department of Engineering Geodesy was renamed to the Department of Land Management and Geodesy, which, in turn, after the opening of the specialty 'Geoinformation Systems and Technologies', changed its name to the Department of Land Management, Geodesy, and Geoinformatics (2002). The head of the department was Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, later Dr. of Technical Sciences, Professor P.H. Chernyaga. At this time, the department reached its greatest flourishing, and its staff reached more than 40 positions. As a result of the division of the Department of Land Management, Geodesy, and Geoinformatics in 2013, the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics was created, which the following year changed its name to the Department of Geodesy and Cartography, headed by Cand. of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor R.M. Yanchuk.
The department has prepared and defended two doctoral and 15 candidate dissertations, and a graduate school operated. The scientific specialization of the department is: 'Forecasting the Development of Territories Considering Functional Properties and the Impact of Geodynamic Processes.'
The department has collaborated and cooperates with research, scientific-production, and state institutions: the Research Institute of Geodesy and Cartography, the State Geodesy Agency of Ukraine, the Main Department of the State Geodesy Agency in Rivne Region, the State Enterprise 'Rivne Scientific Research and Design Institute of Land Management'; related departments of Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Donetsk National Technical University, East European National University named after Lesia Ukrainka; educational institutions in Poland – Olsztyn Agricultural University, 'Warsaw Polytechnic' University, Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW), the Institute of Natural Technology in Warsaw. Department employees serve as scientific consultants for scientific-production institutions and government bodies, participate in the development of normative documents – education standards and normative-legal documents in various fields.
The most extensive research projects include: 'Developing a system for the identification and monitoring of lands affected by amber mining,' 'Creating modern cartographic materials for the territory of the Rivne Nature Reserve, including based on dynamics of satellite images,' 'Researching hydrological characteristics of water bodies in the Cheremysh Nature Reserve,' 'Deploying software and databases of geospatial data for the geoservice of historical and cultural monuments of the Rivne region.'
Department scientists constantly participate in national and international scientific conferences, specialized exhibitions, seminars, etc. The department publishes more than 30 scientific papers annually on topical issues of geodesy, cartography, geoinformatics, and land management.
The department provides teaching of geodesic-cartographic and geoinformational disciplines for students studying in the areas of 'Geodesy, Cartography, and Land Management', 'Construction', 'Architecture', 'Hydropower Engineering', 'Hydrotechnics', 'Mining', 'Aquatic Biological Resources and Aquaculture', 'Agronomy', 'Agrochemistry and Soil Science', and others. The department has a multidisciplinary focus, teaching more than thirty disciplines, among which the largest by volume are: 'Geodesy', 'Engineering Geodesy', 'Satellite Geodesy', 'Higher Geodesy', 'Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing', 'Cartography', 'Geodesic Support for Land Management and Cadastral Works', 'Geodesic Support for Construction', 'GIS and Databases', 'Building and Managing GeoInformation Banks', 'Analysis and Modeling in GIS', 'Geoinformational Analysis of Remote Sensing Data', 'Planning and Managing GIS Projects', 'Transport and Navigation GIS'.
Department lecturers pay significant attention to improving the educational process and its methodological support. They have prepared more than 30 textbooks with accreditations from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and NUWGP.
To ensure quality training for students, specialized educational laboratories in engineering geodesy, digital photogrammetry, cartography and topographic drawing, course and diploma design, and computer classes have been equipped. In 2020, a museum of geodetic instruments was created. Modern electronic devices such as GPS receivers, photogrammetric stations, total stations, and the corresponding software are used in the educational process.
Scientific achievements and practical developments are applied in the educational process, preparing bachelor's and master's theses. All are completed on real projects. The high level of student training is evidenced by numerous prize places in national Olympiads and student research competitions, publications in specialized and professional journals.
