General Information

 

As a separate unit, the department began its activities at the Kyiv Engineering Melioration Institute in 1930, functioning at that time as a department of soil science. Until 1999, it was called the Department of Meliorative Soil Science and Agriculture, where traditional subjects such as meliorative soil science, agriculture, and crop production were taught to train hydromeliorators, ecologists, and economists for the agro-industrial complex. With the opening of the specialty 'Agrochemistry and Soil Science' in 1999, the department gained graduate status and was renamed 'Agrochemistry, Soil Science, and Agriculture'. In memory of the founder of the scientific school 'Meliorative Soil Science' at NUVHP, the leader and mentor of the department's team, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Stepan Tykhonovych Voznyuk, in 2023, the department was renamed 'Department of Agrochemistry, Soil Science, and Agriculture named after S.T. Voznyuk'. The scientific school of meliorative soil science has now expanded into the scientific school 'Agrochemistry, Soil Science, and Meliorative Agriculture named after PhD, Professor S.T. Voznyuk', whose activities are led by Professor, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Rector of NUVHP Viktor Stepanovych Moshynskyi, a student of Professor S.T. Voznyuk.

Over the years, the department has been led by renowned scientists: Professors D.H. Vilensky, N.I. Pshenychnyi, D.V. Yarmizin, S.T. Voznyuk, V.H. Kryshtof, D.V. Lyko, S.I. Veremienko, and Associate Professor S.S. Trusheva. Currently, the department is headed by Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor Tetyana Mykolayivna Kolesnyk.

In 2014, the department successfully passed the re-accreditation procedure for training bachelor's students in 'Agronomy' and master's students in 'Agrochemistry and Soil Science'. In 2024, certificates of accreditation for the educational and professional and educational and scientific programs 'Agrochemistry and Soil Science' of the second (master's) level of higher education were obtained.  In total, more than 50 educational disciplines are taught for the training of specialists at the specified educational-qualification levels. The department's teachers also provide instruction in disciplines such as 'Soil Science' for students specializing in 'Geodesy'.

In recent years, the teaching materials for the courses have been completely updated by the faculty of the Department of Agrochemistry, Soil Science, and Agriculture. More than 180 educational and methodological developments have been prepared and published. All educational disciplines taught at the department, educational and industrial practices, course design, and all types of independent student work are supported by textbooks and teaching aids, interactive complexes, practicums, and methodological guidelines.

The department has a graduate program in specialty 201 'Agronomy', which was accredited in 2022 for 5 years. Over the past five years, the department has prepared four candidates and one doctor of agricultural sciences.

From 1980 to 2023, doctoral dissertations were defended by T.M. Kirienko, V.O. Olinevich, M.O. Klimenko, D.V. Lyko, S.I. Veremienko, V.S. Moshynskyi, and V.M. Polovyi. The department is working on the implementation of its scientific research topic: 'Monitoring the state and evolution of the soil cover of the northwestern region of Ukraine and adapting modern farming systems to the requirements of balanced nature management'.

In general, the scientific activity of the department is carried out in the following areas: optimization of management of soil regimes and properties; justification of the use of wastewater sludge as fertilizers; development of new types of fertilizers and plant growth stimulators, studying their effects on plant growth and development; conducting bioindication assessments of the state of soil cover in natural ecosystems and agroecosystems in Rivne region; studying the factors of the spread of weeds and developing measures to prevent their spread. The overall management of scientific work at the department is carried out by its head — Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor Tetyana Mykolayivna Kolesnyk.

Several scientific schools have been established and are functioning at the department. In particular, the scientific school of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences S.T. Voznyuk — 'Genesis, evolution, and study of hydromorphic and meliorated soils'. Its activities are aimed at researching a complex of problems related to the effective use of soils in the humid zone of Ukraine. The main achievements of the representatives of the scientific school are the development of recommendations that ensure widespread use of the soils of the Polissya and Forest Steppe zones of Ukraine in agricultural use, subject to appropriate meliorative measures.

Another scientific school, led by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor S.I. Veremienko, 'Assessment of agroecological status, evolution, and restoration of soil fertility in the humid zone of Ukraine', studies problems related to the long-term agricultural use of soils in the humid zone of Ukraine, as well as develops measures for restoration and management of soil fertility. The results of the department's scientific research have been reflected in a series of publications in both domestic and foreign journals, formed the basis for monographs, textbooks, and study guides. In the last five years alone, the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department published over 147 articles and conference abstracts, released 8 monographs, and 18 study guides, including 3 study guides sanctioned by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine and a textbook sanctioned by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and received 10 patents for inventions. Three scientific circles operate at the department: 'Entomologist' (head — Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor T.M. Solodka), 'Fruit and Vegetable Grower' (head — Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor O.S. Moroz), 'Cyclic Aquatic Agroecosystems' (head — Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor T.M. Kolesnyk). The scientific circle 'Cyclic Aquatic Agroecosystems' operates on the basis of the educational-scientific laboratory 'Cyclic Aquatic Agroecosystems' (room 200-a, educational building No. 2 of NUVHP), established with financial support from the international grant project TENOR 'Towards Circular Economy in Organic Agriculture'.

Department staff and students participate in expedition-field, laboratory, and scientific-theoretical research on assessing the agroecological status of agricultural lands and developing optimization measures. Over the past five years, more than 30 such studies have been conducted, which indicates the high professional level of the scientific and pedagogical staff.

An important component of the scientific work of the department is involving students in scientific activities. The results of the joint scientific work of students, graduate students, and faculty members are presented at student research and technical conferences, which have traditionally been held annually in April for many years. Following the results of the conferences, the best reports are selected, and their abstracts are published in specialized collections by NUVHP. An annual scientific and technical conference for faculty and graduate students and the first round of the student Olympiad in soil science are also held. Students of the department participate in nationwide scientific competitions and national Olympiads in disciplines such as plant biology (Mykolaiv), agroecology (Zhytomyr, Lviv), where they have repeatedly won prize places. Students such as Anzhelika Semenchuk, Anastasiya Koshmak, Kateryna Chernyavska, and Vadym Shpitun have been awarded diplomas of the II and III degrees.

International relations create conditions for internships and studying abroad for students, particularly in Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, the USA, Canada, and Austria.

The department actively participates in sharing experiences with other higher educational institutions, research organizations, and manufacturing companies in the region. Leading faculty members of the department are members of specialized councils for dissertation defense, as well as members of the scientific and technical councils of the Rivne Nature Reserve and the Derman-Ostroh National Nature Park. The department collaborates with agricultural firms of non-state ownership and prepares highly qualified specialists according to their requirements. The educational and laboratory base of the graduating department of agrochemistry, soil science, and farming includes one specialized classroom, five educational laboratories: crop production; farming and plant protection; botany and entomology, herbarium; soil science; biotechnology; biochemistry and agrochemistry, which are equipped with necessary equipment, chemical reagents, and laboratory glassware, allowing for the full conduct of laboratory classes.

As an independent unit, the department began its activity at the Kyiv Engineering and Land Reclamation Institute in 1930, where at that time it functioned as the Department of Soil Science. Until 1999, it was known as the Department of Reclamation Soil Science and Agriculture, traditionally teaching such disciplines as reclamation soil science, agriculture, and crop production for the training of hydraulic engineers, environmentalists, and economists for the agro-industrial sector.

With the introduction of the specialty “Agrochemistry and Soil Science” in 1999, the department obtained the status of a graduating department and was renamed the Department of Agrochemistry, Soil Science and Agriculture. In memory of the founder of the scientific school of Reclamation Soil Science at National University of Water and Environmental Engineering (NUWEE), Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Stepan Tykhonovych Vozniuk, who was the head and mentor of the department staff, in 2023 the department was renamed the Department of Agrochemistry, Soil Science and Agriculture named after S. T. Vozniuk.

The scientific school of Reclamation Soil Science has now expanded into the scientific school “Agrochemistry, Soil Science and Reclamation Agriculture named after Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor S. T. Vozniuk,” headed by his student, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor, Rector of NUWEE, Viktor Stepanovych Moshynskyi.

The department’s academic staff also provide instruction in such disciplines as “Soil Science” for students majoring in Geodesy, Geography, and Tourism.

In recent years, the teaching staff of the Department of Agrochemistry, Soil Science and Agriculture has completely updated the methodological support of academic disciplines. More than 180 educational and methodological publications have been prepared and published. All academic disciplines, educational and industrial internships, course projects, and all types of independent student work are provided with textbooks, manuals, interactive complexes, practical guides, and methodological recommendations.

The department offers postgraduate studies (PhD program) in specialty 201 “Agronomy,” which was accredited in 2022 for five years. Over the past five years alone, the department has trained four Candidates of Agricultural Sciences (PhDs) and one Doctor of Agricultural Sciences.

During 1980–2023, doctoral dissertations were defended by T. M. Kiriienko, V. O. Olinevych, M. O. Klymenko, D. V. Lyko, S. I. Veremeienko, V. S. Moshynskyi, and V. M. Polovyi. The department is currently implementing a research topic entitled: “Monitoring the Condition and Evolution of the Soil Cover of the Northwestern Region of Ukraine and Adaptation of Modern Farming Systems to the Requirements of Sustainable Environmental Management.”

In general, the department’s research activities focus on the following areas: optimization of soil regime and property management; substantiation of the use of sewage sludge as fertilizers; development of new types of fertilizers and plant growth stimulants and study of their effects on plant growth and development; bioindication assessment of the soil cover condition of natural ecosystems and agroecosystems in Rivne region; study of weed plant distribution factors and development of measures to prevent their spread. The overall coordination of research work at the department is carried out by its Head, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor Tetiana Mykolaivna Kolesnyk.

Several scientific schools operate at the department. In particular, the scientific school of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences S. T. Vozniuk — “Genesis, Evolution and Study of Hydromorphic and Reclaimed Soils.” Its activities are aimed at researching a complex of issues related to the efficient use of soils in the humid zone of Ukraine. The main achievements of this scientific school include the development of recommendations ensuring the wide involvement of soils of the Polissia and Forest-Steppe zones of Ukraine in agricultural use, provided that appropriate reclamation measures are implemented.

Another scientific school, headed by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor S. I. Veremeienko — “Assessment of the Agroecological Condition, Evolution and Reproduction of Soil Fertility in the Humid Zone of Ukraine” — studies problems related to long-term agricultural use of soils in the humid zone of Ukraine and develops measures for the restoration and management of soil fertility.

The research results of the department are reflected in numerous publications both in Ukrainian and foreign editions and form the basis of monographs, textbooks, and teaching manuals. Over the past five years alone, the academic staff have published more than 147 articles and conference abstracts, 8 monographs, and 18 teaching manuals (including 3 manuals approved by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine and one textbook approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), and have obtained 10 patents for inventions.

The department’s lecturers together with students participate in expeditionary field, laboratory, and theoretical research on assessing the agroecological condition of agricultural lands and developing measures for its optimization. Over the past five years, more than 30 such studies have been conducted, demonstrating the high professional level of the academic staff.

The results of joint research by students, postgraduate students, and lecturers are presented at student scientific and technical conferences traditionally held annually in April. International cooperation creates opportunities for student internships and studies abroad, particularly in Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, the USA, Canada, and Austria.

The department actively exchanges experience with other higher education institutions, research institutions, and industrial enterprises of the region. Leading lecturers of the department are members of specialized dissertation defense councils, as well as members of the scientific and technical councils of the Rivne Nature Reserve and the Dermansko-Ostroh National Nature Park.
