The Department of Higher Mathematics is one of the oldest at the university. Established in 1959. During this period, it has been a separate unit of several faculties and educational-scientific institutes: the Faculty of Hydraulic Engineering, the Faculty of Enterprise Economics, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Integrated Systems, and the Educational and Scientific Institute of Automation, Cybernetics and Computer Engineering. The staff of the department increased from four instructors (1959) to 30 instructors (1989).
The first head of the department was associate professor, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences Yu.V. Podshevkin. The next head of the department was associate professor, candidate of technical sciences R.A. Antoniuk, who led the department from 1972 to 1984. He is the author of more than 50 scientific and methodological works, including four textbooks for higher education institutions. The scientific area of research is aerodynamics.
The number of candidates of sciences at the department during this period grew from three to fourteen. Under his supervision, the staff and instructors of the department conducted scientific contractual work. From 1988 and from 1994 to 1998, the department was headed by corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor V.Yu. Slyusarchuk – a well-known mathematician, specialist in differential equations and functional analysis.
He is a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology 2008, a honored educator of Ukraine (2009), a laureate of the Yaroslav the Wise Award (an academic award of the Academy of Higher Education Sciences of Ukraine, 2003), an academician of the Academy of Higher Education Sciences of Ukraine (1992, Mathematics Division), was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the President of Ukraine (2002), insignias of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine 'Excellence in Education of Ukraine' (1996) and 'For Scientific Achievements' (2006), the medal named after M.V. Ostrogradsky (Ukrainian Mathematical Congress, 2001) and the medal named after M.M. Bogolyubov (Ukrainian Mathematical Congress, 2009). V.Yu. Slyusarchuk has published over 360 scientific and methodological works, including 10 monographs and one textbook with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine's approval.
The scientific achievements of V.Yu. Slyusarchuk are particularly defined by the fact that he refuted Lyubich's hypothesis about differential mappings, showed the density of the set of unsolvable Cauchy problems in the space of all Cauchy problems in the case of infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, and the density of the set of Cauchy problems with non-unique solutions in the set of all Cauchy problems in the case of Banach spaces of arbitrary dimension. He introduced the concept of substantially unstable solutions of evolutionary equations and investigated equations with substantially unstable solutions, obtained new theorems about stability and instability via linear approximations of solutions of evolutionary equations, established necessary and sufficient conditions for the invertibility of linear non-autonomous continuous functional-differential operators, established necessary and sufficient conditions for absolute stability of dynamic systems with aftereffect, found new conditions for the existence of almost periodic solutions of nonlinear differential, difference, differential-difference, and functional equations without using H-classes of these equations. He obtained general results about the convergence of numerical series, specific cases of which correspond to the results of Leibeitz, d'Alembert, Gauss, Cauchy, Abel, Dirichlet, Kummer, Ermakov, and other mathematicians. He obtained a new integral criterion for the convergence of series. In addition, the scientist has prepared two candidates of physical and mathematical sciences.
From 1984 to 1988, from 1988 to 1994, and from 1998 to 2012, the head of the Department of Higher Mathematics was candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor Y.I. Yarmush. Yaroslav Ivanovich is the author of 35 scientific works (the scientific area of research is related to projection-iteration and variational-iteration methods for solving various classes of problems).
From 2013 to August 2015, the head of the Department of Higher Mathematics was candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor P.O. Tadeev – a specialist in the fields of geometry and topology as well as pedagogy. P.O. Tadeev is the author of over 120 scientific works on geometry, topology, geometric modeling of vector fields, comparative pedagogy, methodology of teaching mathematics, history of mathematical education in Ukraine, problems of specialized training, theory and practice of teaching gifted children and students. He has supervised four candidates of sciences. The scientist also guides the scientific work of postgraduate students and researchers.
The main scientific results of P.O. Tadeev include: obtaining the splitting of basic geometric images of hyperdistribution in projective (affine) space and in the space of projective (affine) connectivity; constructing a theory of point correspondence between hyperdistributions of different spaces of projective connectivity; establishing significant differences between paired systems of the first and second kind defined on a hypersurface in the space of projective connectivity; investigating affine geometry of vector fields. Among the classical scientific results is the splitting of properties of geometric images of surfaces in three-dimensional projective, affine, and Euclidean spaces (canonical bundle lines, Darboux quadrics, Lie quadrics, affine normals, asymptotic lines), and refuting E. Bombi's theorem about a single characteristic property of Fubini's normal.
From 2015 to 2017, the department was headed by candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor Y.H. Ivashchuk. Y.H. Ivashchuk is the author of more than 15 scientific works on approximation theory and 2 educational-methodical works, a specialist in the best uniform approximations of continuous functions by elements of nonlinear interpolation classes.
From 2017 to 2020, the duties of the head of the department were performed by candidate of pedagogical sciences, associate professor S.P. Tsetyk. S.P. Tsetyk is the author of over 80 scientific-methodical works, five educational manuals, a specialist in the methodology of teaching mathematical disciplines in technical higher educational institutions.
Since 2020, the department has been headed by Professor Tadeev Petro Oleksandrovych.
