The project aims to ensure that drinking water continues to meet high quality standards for all consumers in the EU amid the effects of climate change, providing support to water supply enterprises in implementing climate-resilient management procedures for the supply of safe, disinfected, and non-disinfected water.
Ensuring safe drinking water in sufficient quantities is essential for human health. Both surface and groundwater are important resources for drinking water supply across the European Union. While significant attention is given to the quantity of water, the threats posed by climate change on the quality of drinking water supply are not currently being adequately addressed.
Despite years of reliable operation of water supply systems with and without disinfection, a number of unresolved issues remain regarding microbial stability, the need for disinfection, and the health impacts of disinfection by-products, which are directly linked to the consequences of climate change, such as rising water temperatures and increased levels of natural organic matter.
SafeCREW aims to support the new EU Directive on water cleaning by generating advanced knowledge and developing tools and guidelines for both disinfected and non-disinfected water treatment systems, as well as enhancing comprehensive quality characterization of water, new treatment solutions for active responses to identified threats, and managing distribution networks to prevent degradation of water quality up to consumers.
